Flounder

The shallow flats and back bays around Brownsville provide ideal habitat for flounder. These flatfish are ambush predators, lying in wait for unsuspecting prey. The best time to target flounder is during the fall migration, when they move into the bays in large numbers. However, they can be caught year-round. Focus your efforts on areas with sandy or muddy bottoms near grass beds or channels. A slow-moving jig tipped with a soft plastic or live bait is a deadly presentation. Local flounder are known to congregate near lighted docks and piers at night, making for excellent nighttime fishing opportunities. The South Bay area and the Arroyo Colorado are popular locations. When wading, shuffle your feet to avoid stepping on them, as they can bury themselves in the sand. Be aware of the tides, as flounder will often move with the current to find food.
