Flounder

Pine Island is a great launch point for targeting flounder, particularly the Southern Flounder, in the Sabine Lake system. These masters of camouflage thrive in the shallow, muddy bottoms around the island. The "flounder run" in the fall (October-November) is legendary as they migrate from the back bays towards the Gulf to spawn. However, spring can also be productive as they return. Focus on areas with moving water, such as cuts, channels, and the mouths of bayous. Slow-rolling a soft plastic grub or bouncing a jig head along the bottom is a classic technique. Many anglers also find success gigging at night. A key tip is to pay attention to tide changes – flounder often ambush prey during periods of increased current. Pleasure Island offers good access to Sabine Lake. The flounder in this area are typically good-sized and known for their delicate flavor.
