Flounder

Although Sunrise Beach Village is inland, the Lower Colorado River flowing into Lake LBJ can surprisingly hold flounder, especially after periods of higher salinity. While not as abundant as on the coast, determined anglers can find them. Your best bet is to target the transition zones where the river enters the lake, focusing on sandy or muddy bottoms. Fall is generally the best time, as flounder migrate towards inlets. Live bait, such as mud minnows or shrimp, fished on a Carolina rig is a proven technique. Because this is a freshwater/brackish environment, the flounder may be smaller than those found closer to the Gulf. A local tip: focus on areas with subtle current changes. Lake LBJ offers many public access points, including boat ramps and shoreline fishing areas. Remember to check the current salinity levels before heading out, as flounder prefer slightly brackish water.
