Vermilion Rockfish
Vermilion Rockfish are a popular target for anglers along the Pacific coast, prized for their bright red color and excellent table fare. These bottom-dwelling fish are commonly found in rocky reefs and kelp forests from Southern California up to Washington, making them accessible to a wide range of anglers. Their willingness to take a variety of baits and lures, combined with their relatively predictable behavior, makes them a rewarding species to pursue.
Effective techniques for catching Vermilion Rockfish include bottom fishing with jigs, swimbaits, and bait rigs. A medium-heavy rod and reel combo spooled with 30-50lb braided line is ideal. Jigs in the 4-8 ounce range, especially those with bright colors and reflective finishes, are highly effective. Swimbaits rigged on lead-head jigs or dropper loops are also productive, mimicking the small baitfish that Vermilion Rockfish prey on. For bait fishing, try using squid, cut mackerel, or live anchovies on a dropper loop rig with a 4/0 to 6/0 circle hook.
Vermilion Rockfish can be caught year-round, but the best fishing is often during the spring and fall months when water temperatures are moderate. They tend to congregate around structure, so look for rocky reefs, underwater pinnacles, and steep drop-offs. Depth is also a factor, with Vermilion Rockfish often found in depths ranging from 80 to 300 feet. Pay attention to tide changes, as the bite often improves during periods of slack tide or moderate current.
If you're new to Vermilion Rockfish fishing, start by targeting areas with known rockfish populations, such as those around San Diego, Monterey, or San Francisco. Consult local tackle shops for information on recent fishing reports and productive spots. When fishing deep water, be sure to use a fish finder to locate structure and mark schools of fish. Remember to use proper descending devices when releasing rockfish to help them survive barotrauma.
