Turbot
The Turbot is a highly prized flatfish sought after by anglers for its delicate flavor and impressive size. Found primarily in the North Atlantic, from the waters off the coast of Massachusetts to Maine, and even as far south as Rhode Island and New York, the turbot presents a unique challenge and reward for those willing to target them. Their broad, almost circular shape and mottled coloring provide excellent camouflage on the seabed, making them a challenging but rewarding catch.
For turbot, bottom fishing with heavy tackle is essential due to their size and the often strong currents in their habitat. A sturdy conventional rod and reel combo spooled with 50-80lb braided line is a good starting point. Effective baits include fresh sand eels, herring chunks, or even live mackerel presented on a fish-finder rig or a three-way swivel. Slow-trolling these baits near the bottom can also be productive. Artificial lures like large bucktail jigs tipped with Gulp! artificials can also entice strikes, especially when jigged aggressively near structure.
Turbot fishing is often best during the cooler months, from late spring through early fall. As water temperatures rise, turbot tend to move into slightly deeper, cooler waters. Targeting them during slack tide can be beneficial, as it reduces the amount of weight needed to hold bottom. Pay attention to areas with sandy or gravelly bottoms near drop-offs or channels, as these are prime locations for turbot to ambush prey.
If you're new to turbot fishing, start by consulting local tackle shops in areas like Gloucester or Provincetown, MA. They can provide valuable insights into recent fishing reports, productive areas, and effective bait choices. Don't be afraid to experiment with different presentations and depths to find what works best on any given day. Patience is key, as turbot can be notoriously finicky feeders.
