Tripletail
Tripletail are a unique and highly sought-after gamefish, known for their habit of floating near the surface, often mimicking debris. This behavior makes them a fascinating target for anglers. Found primarily in coastal waters from Florida to North Carolina, and along the Gulf Coast, tripletail offer a challenging and rewarding fishing experience. They're often found around crab pot buoys, channel markers, and floating debris, making them relatively accessible to anglers with small boats or even kayaks. The fight they put up, pound for pound, is impressive.
Effective techniques for catching tripletail include sight fishing with live shrimp, small crabs, or artificial lures like soft plastic shrimp imitations. A medium-action spinning rod and reel combo, spooled with 10-15 pound test line, is a good all-around choice. When using live bait, a simple float rig or a free-lined presentation can be effective. With artificial lures, cast past the fish and retrieve slowly, allowing the lure to sink slightly. Be prepared for a quick strike and a powerful initial run.
Tripletail fishing is typically best during the warmer months, from spring through fall. Look for them in areas with calm, clear water and plenty of floating structure. They tend to be more active during periods of slack tide or when the current is minimal. Cloudy days can also be productive, as the fish may be less wary.
New to tripletail fishing? Start by focusing on areas with known concentrations of floating debris. Approach these areas slowly and quietly, scanning the surface for fish. Polarized sunglasses are essential for spotting tripletail. Once you spot a fish, make a precise cast and be ready for a strike. Remember to set the hook firmly, as tripletail have tough mouths. Key West, Destin, and Islamorada, Florida are top spots to find them.
