Stingray
Stingrays are a fascinating and frequently overlooked gamefish found in a variety of coastal waters, from the shallow bays and estuaries of Massachusetts to the sandy bottoms off the coast of North Carolina. They offer a unique angling experience, providing a surprising amount of power and fight when hooked. While not typically targeted for their meat, the thrill of battling a large ray and the challenge of landing one makes them a rewarding catch for adventurous anglers.
For stingrays, bottom fishing with heavy tackle is the most effective approach. Use a sturdy rod and reel combo spooled with at least 50-pound test line. Circle hooks in sizes 6/0 to 8/0 are ideal for securing a solid hookset in the ray's tough mouth. Effective baits include cut squid, mackerel, clams, or any other readily available oily fish. Present the bait on a fish-finder rig or a Carolina rig to allow the ray to take the bait without feeling resistance. Look for areas with sandy or muddy bottoms near channels or drop-offs.
Stingrays are most active in warmer months, generally from late spring through early fall. During this period, they move into shallower waters to feed and breed. The best time to target them is during the incoming or outgoing tide, as the moving water stirs up the bottom and attracts rays searching for food. In locations like Gloucester, MA, or Narragansett, RI, summer evenings are particularly productive. Be prepared for a long fight, as stingrays are known for their powerful runs and stubborn resistance.
If you're new to stingray fishing, start by targeting smaller rays in calmer waters. Always use a de-hooker to release the ray safely, and be extremely cautious around their barb. Wearing gloves is recommended. Local bait and tackle shops in areas like Provincetown, MA, or Portland, ME, can provide valuable insights into the best spots and techniques specific to the area. Observing experienced anglers and asking for tips can also significantly improve your success rate.
