Skipjack Tuna

Various

The Skipjack Tuna is a hard-fighting, schooling pelagic fish prized by anglers for its speed and aggressive strikes. Found in warm waters across the globe, including the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, Skipjack are a common target for offshore anglers. Their abundance and willingness to hit lures make them an excellent choice for both experienced and novice tuna fishermen, providing thrilling battles and delicious table fare.

For Skipjack Tuna, trolling is a highly effective technique. Use lures like cedar plugs, diving plugs, and skirted trolling lures in the 6-8 inch range. Feather jigs are also effective, especially when targeting schools near the surface. When the tuna are feeding on smaller baitfish, consider using smaller lures or even live bait like pilchards or sardines. Chumming can also be very effective at drawing tuna to the boat. Rods in the 30-50 pound class are suitable, paired with reels capable of holding several hundred yards of line. Fluorocarbon leaders are a must, as Skipjack have excellent eyesight.

Skipjack Tuna fishing is often best during the warmer months, typically from late spring through early fall, depending on the location. Look for areas with current rips, temperature breaks, and floating debris, as these areas often concentrate baitfish and attract tuna. In the Florida Keys and other Gulf Coast locations like Venice, Louisiana, the peak season is usually summer. Early morning and late afternoon can be particularly productive. Keep an eye out for birds diving, which is a telltale sign of feeding tuna.

If you're new to Skipjack Tuna fishing, start by targeting areas where other boats are actively fishing, as this indicates the presence of tuna. Don't be afraid to experiment with different lure colors and trolling speeds to find what the fish are responding to on that particular day. Remember to check local regulations regarding size and bag limits before heading out. A good depth finder is crucial for locating bait balls and identifying areas where tuna are likely to be feeding. Hiring a local charter captain can significantly increase your chances of success, especially if you're unfamiliar with the area.
