Skate
Skate are flat, cartilaginous fish closely related to sharks and rays, offering a unique inshore and nearshore fishing experience. Found along the Atlantic coast, particularly from Maine to New York, skate are often caught while targeting other species but can be specifically targeted for their own sporting value. Anglers appreciate skate for their accessibility, their willingness to bite, and their unusual appearance.
Skate are typically bottom feeders and are caught using bottom fishing techniques. A standard medium-heavy spinning or conventional rod and reel combo, spooled with 20-30 pound test line, is sufficient. A fish finder rig with a circle hook is ideal to avoid gut-hooking the skate. Effective baits include cut squid, clams, or other oily fish. Focus your efforts around sandy or muddy bottoms, near inlets, or around structures like wrecks and reefs. Since skate have no teeth, they crush their prey. Let them take the bait for a few seconds before slowly reeling in to set the circle hook.
Skate can be caught year-round, but their activity often increases during warmer months when they move into shallower waters. Spring and fall are particularly good times to target skate as they migrate along the coast. Look for areas with strong tidal currents, as these areas tend to concentrate baitfish and attract skate. Be aware of local regulations regarding size and bag limits, as they may vary depending on the species of skate and the location.
For beginner skate anglers, focus on fishing in areas known to hold skate, such as sandy flats near inlets or around submerged structures. Start with simple bottom fishing rigs and experiment with different baits to see what works best in your area. Be prepared for a strong pull when a skate takes the bait, and use a net to land them safely. Always handle skate with care, as some species have sharp spines on their backs. Remember to release skate responsibly to help maintain healthy populations.
