Scup
The scup, also known as porgy, is a popular panfish prized by anglers along the Atlantic coast for its delicious, mild flavor and accessibility. Found from Massachusetts down to South Carolina, the scup thrives in a variety of habitats, including shallow bays, rocky reefs, and sandy bottoms. Their abundance and willingness to bite make them a great target for both novice and experienced fishermen, offering consistent action and a tasty reward.
For the best chance of landing a scup, try bottom fishing with small hooks (size 4-6) baited with clams, squid, or sandworms. A simple high-low rig with a sinker heavy enough to hold bottom in the current is very effective. Look for rocky areas or wrecks where scup congregate. Light to medium action spinning or conventional tackle is ideal for detecting their subtle bites. Some anglers also find success using small jigs tipped with bait.
Scup fishing is generally best from late spring through fall when water temperatures are warmer. In the Northeast, the peak season is typically from June to October. During this time, scup move into shallower waters to feed and spawn, making them easier to target. Look for them in areas with structure or near shellfish beds. Early morning and late afternoon often provide the most productive fishing.
If you're new to scup fishing, start by targeting areas with known populations, such as Montauk, NY, or Point Judith, RI. Local tackle shops can provide valuable information on current conditions and hotspots. When fishing from a boat, drifting over rocky areas is a great way to cover ground and locate schools of scup. Be patient and experiment with different baits and depths until you find what works best.
