Scamp Grouper
The Scamp Grouper is a highly sought-after reef fish prized for its delicious flavor and challenging fight. Found primarily in the southeastern United States, these grouper inhabit rocky bottoms, ledges, and artificial reefs in the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. Anglers appreciate Scamp Grouper for their willingness to strike a variety of baits and lures, making them a rewarding target for both experienced and novice fishermen. Popular fishing destinations include Destin, Florida, Key West, Florida, and Charleston, South Carolina.
Scamp Grouper Fishing in Destin
Destin isn't necessarily known as a primary scamp grouper destination, but these tasty fish can be found if you know where to look. The key is targeting deeper, offshore reefs and wrecks in the Gulf of Mexico. Look for structure in the 150-300 foot range. Scamp season is generally open year-round, but the fall months (September-November) often provide the best fishing conditions and larger fish as they fatten up before winter. Live bait, such as pinfish or cigar minnows, is highly effective when fished near the bottom. Jigs and large soft plastics can also produce results. Be prepared for strong currents and the need for heavy tackle to get your bait down. The artificial reefs deployed off Destin are hotspots, but expect company from other anglers. Check the latest regulations regarding size and bag limits before heading out. Launching from Destin Harbor provides easy access to the Gulf, but be sure to monitor weather conditions, as they can change quickly.
