Sauger
The sauger is a popular gamefish prized for its delicious taste and the challenge it presents to anglers. Found in river systems and reservoirs across several states, including those feeding into the Mississippi River and its tributaries, the sauger offers a rewarding freshwater fishing experience. While not as large as its cousin the walleye, the sauger is a tenacious fighter, making it a fun target for anglers of all skill levels. Popular destinations for sauger fishing include areas around Venice, LA, and certain rivers in Texas.
Effective techniques for catching sauger include jigging, trolling, and casting crankbaits. When jigging, use a lead-head jig tipped with a minnow or plastic grub. Focus on areas near the bottom, such as drop-offs, ledges, and current breaks. Trolling crankbaits that dive to the appropriate depth can also be productive, especially in larger reservoirs. For casting, try using small to medium-sized crankbaits or spinners. A medium-light spinning rod and reel combo, spooled with 6-10 pound test line, is generally sufficient for sauger fishing.
Sauger fishing often peaks during the cooler months, particularly in the fall and early spring. As water temperatures drop, sauger tend to congregate in deeper areas, making them easier to target. During the fall spawning run, they may move into shallower areas. Look for sauger in areas with current, such as below dams or in river bends. Pay attention to water clarity, as sauger often prefer slightly stained water. Local fishing reports and tackle shops can provide valuable information about current sauger activity and hotspots.
