Northern Pike

Targeting Northern Pike in the Philadelphia area presents a unique urban angling adventure. The Schuylkill and Delaware Rivers, especially in their tidal sections and connecting creeks, offer surprisingly good pike habitat. Look for weedy areas, backwater sloughs, and areas with submerged structure where pike can ambush prey. Spring and early fall are ideal, as pike are more active in cooler water temperatures. Large swimbaits, crankbaits, and spinnerbaits are effective lures. A local's secret is to explore the smaller creeks that feed into the main rivers, as these often hold overlooked pike. Philadelphia pike aren't known for trophy size, but you can find decent fish in the 2-5 pound range. Be prepared for the occasional musky as well. Always use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs, and handle pike carefully to protect their slime coat.
