Eagle Ray
The Eagle Ray is a captivating species encountered by anglers in coastal waters, prized for its unique appearance and the exciting fight it offers. While not typically targeted, encountering an Eagle Ray can be an unforgettable experience. They are found in the Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, and even some Pacific waters, with notable populations near Hatteras, NC, Miami, FL, and Montauk, NY. These rays prefer warmer waters and are often seen gracefully gliding near the surface.
Eagle Rays are typically caught incidentally while targeting other species. If you find yourself hooked up, be prepared for a strong, sustained pull as they use their broad wings to generate power. Medium to heavy spinning or conventional tackle is suitable for handling these rays. While they aren't specifically baited, they may take a variety of natural baits intended for other species. Using circle hooks is recommended to ensure a clean hookset and facilitate release.
Eagle Ray encounters are more common during the warmer months, particularly from late spring through summer, when they move closer to shore to feed and breed. Look for them in shallow bays, estuaries, and near sandy bottoms where they forage for crustaceans and mollusks. Calm, clear water provides the best visibility for spotting them near the surface.
If you're new to encountering Eagle Rays, it's crucial to handle them with care. Avoid touching their tail, as some species have a venomous barb. If you intend to release one, do so quickly and gently, ensuring it can swim away safely. Respect these magnificent creatures and appreciate the opportunity to witness their beauty in their natural habitat.
