Calico Bass

Calico bass, also known as kelp bass, are a prized saltwater gamefish found primarily off the coast of Southern California and Baja California. These fish are renowned for their vibrant colors, aggressive strikes, and the challenging fishing they provide in their natural habitat of rocky reefs and kelp forests. Anglers are drawn to calico bass for their willingness to attack a variety of lures and baits, making them a fun and rewarding target.

Effective techniques for catching calico bass include casting, jigging, and fishing with live bait. Casting swimbaits or crankbaits around kelp paddies and rocky points is a popular method. Jigging with leadhead jigs and plastic trailers near the bottom can also be highly productive. Live bait, such as anchovies or sardines, is another excellent option, especially when fished on a drop shot rig or Carolina rig. A medium-action rod and reel with braided line is ideal for battling these fish in heavy cover.

The best time to target calico bass is during the warmer months, from spring through fall, when they are most active and feeding aggressively. During this period, they can be found in shallower water, making them accessible to anglers fishing from boats or kayaks. Look for areas with healthy kelp growth and plenty of structure, as these provide cover and attract baitfish.

If you're new to calico bass fishing, start by targeting areas with visible kelp canopies. Focus on fishing the edges of the kelp, as this is where the bass are most likely to be ambushing prey. Don't be afraid to experiment with different lure retrieves and bait presentations to find what works best on a given day. Pay attention to the tide, as calico bass often feed more actively during periods of moving water.
