Bluefish
Bluefish are aggressive and voracious predators, known for their schooling behavior and willingness to attack almost any lure or bait. Found along the Atlantic coast from Maine to Florida, these fish provide exciting action for anglers of all skill levels. Their powerful runs and sharp teeth make them a thrilling catch, and they are readily accessible from shore, piers, and boats, making them a popular target for recreational fishermen.
Several techniques are effective for catching bluefish. Trolling with spoons, plugs, or tube lures is a productive method for covering large areas. Casting with metal lures, such as Hopkins or Kastmasters, is great for targeting schools of bluefish feeding on the surface. Live baiting with bunker (menhaden) or mullet is also highly effective, especially when fishing around inlets or nearshore structures. Jigging with diamond jigs can also trigger reaction strikes. When using any method, be sure to use wire leaders to prevent bluefish from biting through your line.
Bluefish are migratory, and their availability varies throughout the year. They typically arrive in the Northeast during the spring and remain through the fall. The Mid-Atlantic region sees good bluefish action throughout the summer and fall. In the Southeast, bluefish may be present year-round, but the best fishing is usually during the spring and fall migrations. Look for areas with strong currents, such as inlets and rips, where bluefish often congregate to feed.
If you're new to bluefish fishing, start with simple techniques like casting metal lures from shore or a pier. Look for signs of feeding activity, such as diving birds or surface commotion. Be prepared for a fast and aggressive fight, and always handle bluefish with care due to their sharp teeth. Using a dehooker can help release fish safely. Popular locations include Montauk, NY, Cape May, NJ, and Virginia Beach, VA.
